New system. Lots of Problems.. Latest is CD Rom d Post a Reply
From: Tim on 08/21/2001
Recently built the following:
AMD 1.33 GHZ Athlon - New
FIC AZ11EA Motherboard - New
ATI All In Wonder 128 - New
512MB Memory - New
20 GB WD HDD - Transferred
HP 9500 CD-RW - Transferred

Initially under Windows 98SE... Under normal operation fine. After looging off and at the windows logon screen at idle, would get VXD VMM(01) blue screen of death. After research, noticed that core voltages seemed to be a problem in many cases, but my voltages checked out properly. After a week or so, the 20 GB Hard Drive started chirping occasionally and eventually got worse and would freeze at times. Replaced with a 40GB and so far seems to be OK.

Loaded Windows 2000 in dual boot mode and no crashes under it. All of a sudden HP CD wont read most CDs in either OS. Threw a Sony CD Drive in and worked ok for a day or so, now the same problem is occurring with it.

Seems like too much of a coincidence that I have lost 1 hard drive and 2 CD drives within a few days. What could be the culprit??????

Please help!!! I have replaced memory and that is not it.

Had a friend try the HP in his system and confirmed it is not working properly.

I've heard (don't know for sure) of issues with several differant Windows operating systems with ATA 100 controllers. You won't find anything in Microsoft's knowledgebase so you may want to contact the manufacturer of your system. Also try running your system with a fan on it and no cover on it, could be heat related.
