Had a power failure, now my computer will not boot Post a Reply
From: Tracy on 09/05/2001
I have an Emachine667, my problem is, I had a power failure while the computer was on, I unplugged the tower and left it unplugged all night, in the morning, I turned it on, and the computer will not boot up. The monitor is working, but is not receiving a signal from the video. Is it possible that because of the power failure, it killed the video card?

Well, luckily for me the warranty is still in effect, because I only bought it this past February. I have to pack it up and send it in, and they're mailing me a new one. In fact when I talk about a power failure, what actually happened was my cat stepped on the reset switch on the power strip which turned everything off. When I turned the button back on and then turned the computer on, the monitor comes on and the computer comes on, but I get nothing on the monitor screen. The monitor's lights blink which tells me that the monitor is working, it is just not receiving any info from the video. I searched my emachines handbook which clearly says that if there is a power failure, unplug the computer for 10 sec. and then plug it back in, and turn it on. Which I did, in fact I left it unplugged overnight, and still nothing. The light on the tower comes on, but no beep. I tried putting in the recovery disk, but nothing comes up on the screen at all. The tech at emachines says that my video card must be shot, but I find it strange that a power failure would do that. Does this help any?

That is possible. There could have been a large spike of power before the failure. (That shouldn't have affected you though, because your system, including your internet connection, is connected to a good quality surge surpressor, right?)
You did not provide enough info though. By saying not booting up do you mean, the system won't power up or it will power up but the video doesn't initialize.
If it powers up, beeps once but still no video, you might want to, and I know this sounds stupid, check the connector. I've billed more than one customer for a 1 hour response time, at $150 an hour, to plug in a cord.
If it doesn't power up, your power supply might be the culprit.
How good is the warranty on an e-machine?
