EXPLORER.EXE problems and then some.... Post a Reply
From: Jennifer on 12/14/2001
I have a 266 Packard Bell *it was free lol* with Windows 98 and the person who had it before deleted some things that messed up the sound. It was working ok but I decided to do the system restore to see if it would restore all they messed up but I got an even bigger problem now. I did the system restore and it restarted afterwards. When it restarted it seemed like all was normal. I seen the windows screen and then the desktop showed up but then I received an error: This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If this problem persists contact the program vendor. Details were: EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at 015f:00401f31. Registers: EAX=00000000 CS=015f EIP=0401f31 EFLGS=00010246 EBX 00000001 SS=0167 ESP 005fff20 EBP 005fff28 ECX=c152edc0 DS=0167 ESI 00000000 FS=283f EDX=005fff30 ES=167 EDI=00000000 GS=0000 BYTES @ CS:EIP: 8B 08 50 ff 11 8B 45 08 50 8B 08 ff 51 08 8B 45

I searched the microsoft database and found an article about it. It said to restart in command prompt only and type this: ren C:\windows\system\shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old I did this and it said: File not found- C:\windows\system\shdocvw.dll
Is there anything else I can do?? Why would it do this? Did I restore to the point before explorer was installed?? I don't have a cd or books to go with it and PB website sucks. Im pretty much illiterate when it comes to computers so any help would be much appreciated!!! Thanks

When shuting down my system I get a explorer.exe not shuting down error and it gives you 1 min to save your files. It still does not shut down, you have to end the task and then the PC powers off.
Can you help please. I lost my system, and had to re-install. I would not like to re-install everything again.

I did everything I was supposed to and it still gave me the same error. It seemed like it got a little bit further in the process because my background came up instead of the PB logo. But right when it shoudl load it gives me the same operation. In the registry it said started to them all but after I did each date it said not started except one. And Ive tried it a dozen times. I tried in safe mode and still nothing different. Is there any other reason why explorer keeps doing this? Is there something else I can do to restore it properly? Thanks

: : I didnt mention that my start bar won't come up and I cant do anything with the computer. Ive tried starting in Safe mode also and same thing happens. Thanks
