Same problem here with shdoc401.dll.......
Could not insert the replacement registry. Kept coming up with bad file name. Left error message intact. Placed image 5.0 into cd drive and installed and did backup on data portion. Removed old programs and data that was no longer used to reduce back up size. Then while reviewing files and programs in hard drive, I came across ie6setup program still inside hard drive which I had saved previously. I clicked on it and it force overwrote existing internet explorer. Interesting is that it brought up windows 98 window that was forced into checking for and replacing missing files.
When done with forced install it said to shut down and restart so I did. Had to close error message and ctrl alt del twice to close.
Restarted computer and everything came back with no loss of programs.
This all happened to me I think because I was trying to download EAV antivirus and I may have had a virus that did not allow the download to complete. Unfortunately this all took me hours to come across the solution that worked for me, but it was better than the alternative.

Gidday, and Thanks. Thought this might be a bugger to fix.

Searched for this error and found your answer. Tried it and re-booted for good measure. Now...........Perfect!

Thanks for the advise, keep it up.

and MS, try to get it right! We hate having to get answers to stupid little problems when the OS should be better for all the $$$ MS Corp earn.

Sorry. got a bit carried away as you all do.

Thanks again

My internet explorer (win 98) gives me an error message with the following detail... EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module VX2.DLL at 0167:100103d0. This happens when I try to look at my folders in my computer too. This seems to have a different solution from those listed below (SHDOC401.DLL), because I could not find any long "." extentions in the Registry. Please help.
Thanks

Jim,

The gift that keeps on giving!

I've had this problem for a long time. I just had to delete one of the Registry entries with a long extension and voila, I can create folders again! Thanks, man.

I do not understand when you say to "scroll through extensions, and if you find a long one right click & delete"

Could you be more specific as I need to correct this problem but I don't want to delete something that may be important.

How do I tell if something is "a long one?"

Thanks for this solution. It cleared up the problem right away! Turns out I had a long extension called .recall_shwarzhennegger. Go figure!
Well problem solved. This is why the internet is such a valuable resource without it I would of had to buy a $50 book to figure this one out. Your advice was valuable! Thanks again

Roger Pfaff
(In English: delete abnormal long file name extensions (more than 20 Characters) in Registry under Hkey Classes Root, these begin with a DOT e.g. .avi .zip)

Thanks a MILLION! One thing I despise is crapware like hotbar. I was having the "Hotbar registry remnants causes problems trying to create new folders/items problem".... I removed the registry entry, and POOF, there went the problem!

I'm less p.o.'d than I was about 10 minuntes ago...
Now I have to figure out why my OE6 is crashing.

Thanks again.

Hi,
I have found it is linked to Hotbar. Hotbar is a tool for IE I downloaded. I removed it a while back and it left a registry entry. It was along one under
HKEY_Classes_Root
.dll_GetPromo&El=bc%3bhotbar%5felement%3b&SG=&RAND=27894_
I delted that key and I am creating New Folders again.

Extract a copy of urlmon.dll and put it in the C:\Windows\System directory. After I did this everything worked fine again. It seems for some odd reason when I uninstalled a program it deleted this essential file as well, and that cause the exact error everyone is speaking of.

This problem can be caused by an excessively long file extension entry in the registry. To fix:
- Open Regedit (Start, Run, type "regedit" without the quotes)
- Click on plus sign "+" beside HKEY_Classes_Root
- Scroll thru all the extensions (starting with ".")
- If you find a long one, right click on it and click "delete"
- Continue checking thru all the extensions listed
when i did this, i only removed lines that had HOTBAR written in the line....Worked great!!! and i am no computer wiz, this was easy!

I received the same error (different adresses, though). My guess was a previous, faulty installation of ie6, or perhaps a bad plugin like 'hotbar'.
I managed to start the system and leave the errormessage unattended.
control-panel didn't work, windows explorer didn't work, but I had access to start | run and my cd-rom drive.
here's what to do:
in another computer I downloaded | copied a FULL version of the ie6 install-file (ie6setup.exe) and burned it to a cd.
I moved the cd to the faulty computer and clicked start | run
and in the start-bar I wrote d:\ie6setup.exe (d could be 'e', 'x' or whatever letter your cd-device uses).
from here, everything went smooth. I received a statement that I had to force/re-install all components, which I answered with OK.
I restarted the faulty computer, and everything worked after that.
If you want to locate shdoc401.dll for some reason, look in cab39 on the install-cd for win98 2nd edition.
note: at least the file resided there in the swedish version of the win98-cd.
yours truly

My friend's computer had the same problem. I tried all the fixes on this site as well as others. Through a process of elimination, I finally got a message that certain files (DLLs) were not the latest. I went to my XP machine and burned 5 of the latest versions to disk and got the 6th from a Windows 98SE machine. All the new DLLs had to be greater than version 6.0.2800.2200, except the SHDOC401.DLL, which had to be greater than 5.50.4134.600. I then booted to DOS, went to Windows\System and renamed MSHTML.DLL, SHDOC401.DLL, SHDOCVW.DLL, URLMON.DLL and WININET.DLL to *.DL_ files (In case I screwed something up and had to put things back the way they were.) I then copied all the newer files, from the CD I burnt, to the Windows\System folder, rebooted to Windows, held my breath and amazingly it started without any errors. This worked for me, maybe it will work for you. Good luck.

If you can't get into Windows because this error is crashing the shell, boot into DOS (hold F8 as soon as the POST has completed) and try the scanreg.exe /fix command while in the c:\windows directory (or whatever the OS is installed in)
