Original Problem Posted by: Amanda on 04/20/2004
Hi,
I stumbled across this board looking for some solutions to my problem, and I hope someone can help me.

I've got a PC running Win98 which was fine until a few days ago (trouble possibly started after downloading and installing the latest MS security patch??)

What happens is shortly after loading up, the screen suddenly gets a yellow tint, like you are looking at it through a yellow filter. It also shifts horizontally. The mouse icon turns into something that looks like a minature window- square with a line on the top. While I can still move the mouse around, the screen is frozen and keybord entry doesn't do anything.

Upon turning off the computer and rebooting, there is usually some problem with the registry that Windows wants to fix.

I've tried downloading new video drivers. The video card (not sure what name, and any attempt to find out results in the yellow screen mentioned above) is using SiS 300/305. I tried downloading the new drivers. If I try to install them in regular mode, the screen get a pink tint and freezes when the installation program tries to access the resgistry. If I install them in safe mode, the driver installs ok, but upon rebooting, the registry is changed to an older version and the problem persists.

In desperation, I did change the acceleration of the video driver to "none", but that doesn't help.

I tried to download a troubleshooting program, but trying to install that caused the computer to crash and reboot(in safe mode) or causes a blue tint and crash (in regular mode).

I don't know a heck of a lot about the windows registry, so I have no idea how to fix it to properly access the drivers or to allow the installation of the updated driver files. Or if that is even the problem....

Help!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer me.
